Meet the Montana Neurology Team
Medical Director
Thomas Swanson, MD, FAES is the CEO and medical director of Montana Neurology and the Montana Comprehensive Epilepsy Program. He is the leader of the provider team responsible for maintaining the highest standards of patient care for which we have become known. Dr. Swanson meets weekly with all Montana Neurology providers for ongoing neurology education and formal case conferences. Regardless of which provider you see, your individual case receives the entire teams attention.
Our Neurology Nurse Practitioners
MacKenzie Westphal, APRN
Mackenzie Westphal is a certified Nurse Practitioner who specializes in outpatient neurology. Mackenzie was born and raised in Missoula, Montana. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Montana State University and a Doctorate in Nursing Practice degree from Montana State University She is board-certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and is a member of the American Academy of Neurology. Mackenzie is very passionate about epilepsy and general neurology. In her spare time, Mackenzie enjoys traveling, cooking, hiking, and spending time with her friends and family.
Peggy Chaffin, APRN
Peggy holds both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and Master of Science Nursing degree from the University of Great Falls. Peggy has extensive past experience in surgical and medical nursing in a variety of specialties. She is particularly interested in memory disorders, movement disorders, and epilepsy. In her spare time Peggy enjoys horse back riding, snowmobiling, and spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren.
Office Manager
Sheri Thick
Sheri has extensive experience in medical office management. She coordinates all aspects of the office, ensures individual patient satisfaction, and works closely with Dr. Swanson to respond to the various challenges of providing high quality, ethical health care. Sheri has been a loyal, compassionate part of the Montana Neurology team for over 10 years. She has had a life long passion for horses.
EEG Technology Staff
Our EEG laboratory has the latest state-of-the-art Natus EEG equipment. But more importantly, we have an incredible depth of experience and talent on our staff. We individualize your experience, work closely with your physician, and provide a standard of care that far exceeds any other lab in the state. If you have epilepsy, don’t trust you EEG testing to any one else.
Logan Fisher
Logan is a graduate of the University of Mary, in Bismarck, ND with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, and a minor in Wellness. Prior to joining Montana Neurology Logan had a long and successful career in the National Forest Service in various fire-fighting capacities, including as a smokejumper. He is a great addition to our technology team.
Mattie Murphy, R.EEGT, PA
Mattie is a board certified EEG technologist as well as a practicing Physician’s Assistant. Mattie is one or our experienced ambulatory EEG monitoring and scanning tech. She is a Missoula native, and graduate of Dickinson State University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology. Mattie has also earned her Masters of Science in Physician Assistant from Rocky Mountain College, in Billings, MT.
Cassandra Stephens, R.EEGT, R.EP T, CNIM, CLTM
Cassie is a native of Cedar Rapids, IA. She has had a long career in a variety of clinical settings with extensive experience in EEG, epilepsy monitoring, evoked potentials, and both intra-operative and critical care monitoring. Cassadra provides an extremely high level of expertise to our world class EEG laboratory.

Samantha Steiger
Front Office Manager
Samantha is a dedicated and caring part of our team who guides you through your patient experience here at Montana Neurology. Sam is a Missoula Montana native who enjoys cooking and enjoying the beauty Montana has to offer. She graduated from the University of Montana with two degrees in Culinary Arts and Food Service Management. When Sam has downtime, she enjoys playing video games and spending time with friends and family. This is her second healthcare position and is dedicated coordinating excellent patient care.
